Type the word, then a space to send it — the space counts, the same as in real typing. A wrong key locks the word and costs the car speed, though your pace reading stays honest. Words get longer as the race goes on, whatever its distance. Text has four steps: Home row uses only asdfghjkl and the space, Plain opens the whole alphabet, Caps & punctuation adds shift and the marks, and Numbers mixes two- to five-digit tokens into the plain words so the top row gets reached for. On a computer a keyboard guide is drawn under the word, lighting the next key in the colour of the finger that presses it, with the two keys under your index fingers marked; it appears on its own for home-row text and the Keys control turns it on or off anywhere. It grows a digits row on the Numbers step and only there. The Layout control draws it as QWERTY, Dvorak or Colemak, so it points at the keys your own keyboard actually has. The car runs on your rolling pace over the last five seconds, so coasting slows you down, and running close behind a car catches its tow. Grid has a fourth setting, Solo practice: an empty track with nobody to finish behind — no rivals and not even your own ghost, so you can just find the keys. A solo lap still teaches the drill which keys you are slow on, but it does not set a lap record, because there is no tow and nothing to chase. If you would rather be told what to practise than choose it, the start screen opens with a course: six lessons that step from the home row to the number row, each one a solo lap with an accuracy bar (and, from lesson two, a pace bar) to clear before the next opens. Your own settings are left exactly as you set them while a lesson borrows them. Where the course is the thing to learn, the championship is the thing to win: three rounds of three laps, one on each circuit in turn, against you and four rivals — the grid you had when you started it, held the same for all three rounds, and no ghost of your own, because a replay of a race you have already had should not be taking points off you. Positions score 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2, the standings carry over, and the third round settles it. Rounds are real races: they set lap records like any other. What you type stays your own choice, and abandoning a round voids it — nothing is banked and you can race it again. Esc pauses mid-race, and clears the grid otherwise.
